The staff was very helpful, and friendly, despite the fact that Booking.Com called the manager and told her I was complaining. I had reserved a four star riad in Marrakech well in advance of my visit there with two friends. Less that 24 hours before my departure, I was notified by Booking.com that my reservation had been cancelled at that they were switching me to a comparable hotel. It didn’t look comparable in the photos, and the descriptions by former guests were all over the place. We decided given the time frame we had, and the fact that it was a holiday week, we would stay a night or two while looking for somewhere else. Upon arrival we were told we had to pay for the whole time, and in cash. Given that it was a holiday, many of the atm’s weren’t restocked, and were out of money....so it was a headache and unnerving, trying to scramble to get the funds together. The location is right across the street from the Medina, but that is a mixed blessing. My room was right on the main road and so full of smog it was hard to breathe. There were no other rooms available that night, so the manager very kindly moved me the next day to a room that was on the other side of the hall. The bathrooms were very basic, and had no hot water. The manager was very kind and apologetic, but it was a good lesson in privilege. I found a local hammam and that was the perfect solution.
My unhappiness ultimately was not with the property itself, it is with Booking.com. I had every right to complain to them in regard to the situation, and they chose to contact the manager. While she remained helpful, I knew immediately, that her demeanor had changed. I also knew why. I found it unprofessional of Booking.Com to contact them first and then send me a snotty letter telling me that I should perhaps learn more about other cultures. The property did not try to represent itself in any way other that what it was. It is a grand old building, with some really lovely tiles that has seen better days. The rooms are clean, and the beds sheets were always fresh and clean. While the bathroom situation was a bit dire, finding the hammam helped overcome the lack of warm water or functional shower. The manager and I left on very good terms, and I will remember her, and many moments in Marrakech with much fondness.
